Highlights of the Nwoya Community Sensitization Engagement On SGBV

The Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, has called for urgent collective action to end Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). The call was made during no a community sensitization meeting in Nwoya District.

The meeting, organized by the Uganda Law Society in partnership with UN Women under the Justice for Her project, brought together community members and justice sector stakeholders to discuss the growing concern of SGBV in society.

The Principal Judge expressed concern over the increasing cases of defilement of young girls, violence against women, and forced child marriages. She noted that many perpetrators are often known to the victims, including husbands, neighbors, and other community members. She firmly stated that taking a12-year-old girl into marriage is not culture, but a violation of the law and human rights that must stop immediately.

Lady Justice Abodo emphasized that ending SGBV begins with individuals and communities, calling on the public to take responsibility by reporting such cases. She noted that without reporting, the justice system cannot effectively respond or take action.

She further highlighted ongoing efforts by the Judiciary and the Police to improve access to justice, including measures to strengthen confidence in the reporting system. She pointed out that partnerships under the Justice for Her initiative have supported the establishment of private reporting spaces and dedicated complaint books at police stations to ensure confidentiality and protect survivors.

The Principal Judge also cited interventions in areas such as Gulu, where special rooms have been established to support survivors of SGBV, ensuring dignity and privacy during interviews.

She urged victims and communities to report all cases of SGBV, assuring them that government institutions are available to provide support and justice.

Lady Justice Abodo also underscored the importance of empowering women economically and socially, noting that such empowerment enables women to make informed decisions and leave abusive environments. She emphasized that women are the backbone of families and communities and should be supported to make safe and positive life choices.
